The Gold Coast Visitor Information
Facing the Coral Sea to the north and Tasman Sea to the south, Gold Coast is a coastal city nestled at the south-eastern corner of Queensland. The metropolis, which is situated along the easternmost borders of Australia, is located some 79.6 kilometres south-east of Brisbane, the state capital. While there remains no consensus on the origin of the area's name, locals simply prefer to think of it as a reference to the "golden texture" of the region's beaches and climate and formally adopting it in 1958.
In May 1770, James Cook (a Captain in the British Royal Navy) took note of the Gold Coast region while sailing along its coast aboard the HM Bark Endeavour. Apart from Matthew Flinders (another Captain in the British Royal Navy) 1802 passage and escaped convicts from the Moreton Bay penal colony settling in, there was hardly any significant development in the area during the next 50 years. In 1823, however, the locale became home to its first European settlers when British explorer John Oxley landed at Mermaid Beach (named after his boat, Mermaid).
With an estimated population of close to 600,000 residents, Gold Coast is the second most populous city in the state, sixth in the entire country, and the largest non-capital city in Australia. The metropolis has a land area of 414.3 square kilometres, which covers 10 State Districts and four Federal Divisions. It is part of the Local Government Area of Gold Coast City.
Gold Coast has numerous attractions for a wide variety of enthusiasts. People who wish to see more of the region's nature and wildlife might want to visit Burleigh Heads National Park, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, David Fleay's Wildlife Park, Glow Worm Caves, and Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk.
