Distinguished and Famous people from The Gold Coast
🏅 Sally Pearson
Olympic hurdler Sally Pearson made the Gold Coast her home and training base. Her international record includes silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, gold at London in 2012 and world championship success. She later served as an ambassador for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. An injury ruled her out of competing there, a difficult turn for an athlete so closely associated with the host city. Her local connection comes through residence, training and involvement in the city’s sporting life across a demanding international career.
✈️ Lores Bonney
Lores Bonney moved to the Gold Coast after the end of her marriage in the 1950s, bringing a remarkable flying history into a quieter later chapter. She had flown solo around Australia, reached England after an accident and repairs, and completed a journey from Australia to South Africa. Declining eyesight ended her flying in 1949, but not her interest in travel. Bonsai offered another absorbing pursuit, rather different in scale from the distances she had once covered by air. Her Gold Coast association is later residence, following the journeys that established her place in Australian aviation.
🦉 David Fleay
David Fleay moved his family and wildlife collection to West Burleigh in 1952, establishing a reserve overlooking Tallebudgera Creek. He studied and bred native animals while newspaper writing and other work helped meet the costs. His wife Sigrid was an important conservation campaigner, and the family faced repeated threats from proposed development. Protecting the habitat became as important as caring for the animals within it. The State later acquired the property to preserve that work. The local legacy combines scientific research, public education and a long effort to keep a natural setting amid a rapidly changing coast.
